Would you ever buy an eco house?
It would totally depend on the house and the location, but if I was taking on a renovation project I would definitely try to include as many energy saving devices and eco-friendly materials as possible.
Why do you think property programmes are so popular?
I think one reason for their success is that we are very much a home owning nation, in many countries in Europe renting is the norm, but in Britain every man’s home is his castle!
Do you have any advice for people buying or selling in the current volatile market?
As the scouts say ‘be prepared’. Have your finances in order, your mortgage agreed, and the solicitor on speed dial. If you are ready to move then you are in a much stronger bargaining position.
Do you think first time buyers have been priced out of the market?
Unfortunately, yes, first time buyer numbers are at their lowest since 1981. A recent Halifax Building society’s survey claimed that first time buyers can’t afford to buy in 92 per cent of UK towns. It is a real problem which seems to be very difficult to remedy. More affordable housing is needed, especially in major cities and towns, to allow key workers to be able to live reasonably close to where they live.
What do you think of Home Information Packs?
The premise behind HIP’s is to speed up sales, to ensure that both the buyers and sellers have more information to hand, so there are fewer nasty surprises down the road. There is little evidence at the moment to suggest that the whole process has been made easier and quicker. Some people are of the opinion that the £400 you spend on a HIP pack could be better spent on insuring your solicitor was top notch.
How do you relax?
A perfect afternoon would include, a book, a sofa, a fire and a glass of wine.
